Company Results

Carphone Warehouse have reported a 4.7% decline in like-for-like sales for the 3 months to 31 December 2011.

Flying Brands have reported a decline in sales to £4.8m from £6.4m for the 3 months to 31 December 2011.
Furniture Village have reported an increase in sales to £181m from £172m for the year to 03 April 2011. Pre-tax profit declined to £3.7m from £5.6m for the same period. (Source: Retail Week)
Halfords have reported a 1.1% decline in Group sales for the 39 weeks to 30 December 2011. UK sales and like-for-like sales declined by 2.3% and 2.9% respectively for the same period.
Ikea have reported a 6.9% increase in global sales for the year to August 2011. Pre-tax profit increased to £3.76bn from £3.27bn for the same period. (Source: The Telegraph)
John Lewis have reported an 11.4% increase in sales (including VAT) for the week to 21 January 2012. Fashion, Home and Electricals & Home Technology sales increased by 9.6%, 5.8% and 22.0% respectively. Sales at johnlewis.com increased by 47.4%.
Moonpig.com have reported a 20% increase in sales to £38m in the year to April 2011. (Source: Verdict)

Poundland have reported a 25% increase in sales for the 5 weeks to 01 January 2012. Like-for-like sales increased by 5.9% for the same period. (Source: Financial Times)
Waitrose have reported a 9.2% increase in sales (including petrol) for the week to 14 January 2012.
WH Smith have reported a 3% decline in Group sales for the 21 weeks to 21 January 2012. Like-for-like sales declined by 5% for the same period.

Clothing, Footwear & Accessories

Asda have partnered with Azadea, a Lebanon based group, as part of their plans to launch franchise stores for their George clothing brand in the Middle East.

– It has been reported that Harriet Williams has resigned as a Head of Digital Development at Debenhams and will join Gucci as their eCommerce Director. (Source: Retail Week)
The Jacobson Group, the owner of brands Gola and Ravel, has bought footwear retailer Dolcis out of administration for an undisclosed sum. (Source: Drapers)
Edinburgh Woollen Mill have plans to open 150 high street and mall stores in 2012, as well as more than 100 stores across the rest of the group.

Selfridges has unveiled a host of exclusive products by UK labels including Mulberry, Gieves & Hawkes, Barbour and Fred Perry for its jubilee and Olympics celebrations later this year.

Electrical & Entertainment

Food & Drink

Amazon have plans to add a chilled foods category to their food & drink segment in order to increase their sales. (Source: Retail Week)
Asda have plans to invest £500m in their stores and to open 25 new stores in 2012, creating up to 5,000 jobs, as a part of their expansion plans. (Source: Reuters)

– It is reported that seven senior managers at The Co-operative Group are to leave. The departures include Kay Wheelton, Head of Commercial Trading, and Helen Bridgett, Head of Strategy and Planning. (Source: Retail Week)

The UK retail sector faces another tough year in 2012 as consumers continue to cut back, according to a report by Verdict Research. It claims consumer spending will grow by 1.2% next year, the third slowest rate in 40 years. Food sales are expected to rise strongly, the report claims, as more consumers will cut back on going out.

Maureen Hinton of Verdict said: “The first three months of 2012 will be the most difficult period for retailers as consumers cut back severely after the expensive Christmas period. Conditions will ease slightly with events such as Easter, the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics improving consumer sentiment, but overall confidence will still be low.

Household

Morrisons have plans to invest £15m to overhaul the former Best Buy stores as part of their plans to expand their Kiddicare business. The first store is expected to open in the Autumn and will create 700 new jobs. (Source: Retail Bulletin)

Motor

Farnell Land Rover, part of the Co-operative Motor Group, has taken the Dealer of the Year award at the annual Land Rover dealer conference.

Halfords Autocentres have reported a 13% increase in the number of Saab cars seen across its 247 garages throughout the UK since the Swedish brand went into administration at the end of last year.
HR Owen have been appointed as the UK’s only official dealer for Pagani, the Italian supercar brand.
