Lifestyle was the poorest performer this week, although still registered a positive figure (+0.9%). With freezing temperatures affecting the whole of the UK, the subsector was brought down by poor performance in outdoor goods stores – with skiing specialists excepted. However, with like-for-likes already based off weak 2014 figures with flooding besieging the country, lifestyle retailers may have hoped for a stronger performance this week. Small gift ticketing and department stores once again had a strong week.

Fashion continued on its relative plateau this week, although saw like-for-likes improve by 1.3%. Budget fashion retailers generally outperformed their designer counterparts, with many offering discounts even to new lines of clothing. Budget fashion retailers also benefitted from the comparatively good performance of retail parks. However, with many retailers already promoting deeper discounting in the upcoming week as part of Valentines’ Day promotions, we expect an upturn in activity over the next week, particularly amongst designer stores.

Homewares were up across the board, with just a single retailer reporting negative like-for-likes which lead to an increase in like-for-likes of +10.2%. Home furnishings performed particularly strongly.

Non-store sales were up by +21.4% – a similar figure to the previous three weeks and broadly in line with expectations. Online fashion sales still have yet to rise following a post-January sales slump (up by +31.0), although a notable increase in online promotion of Valentines’ Week fashion sales may stimulate sales in the upcoming week. Homewares was the worst performer online this week (+7.9%), although given the strong performance of high street homewares this week, it seems many shoppers were enticed into stores rather than make homeware purchases online
