Lifestyle saw the most dramatic improvement this week, with like-for-likes rising out of negative territory to +8.5% – the best figure since the first week of January. Although outdoor activity shops still have yet to see sales rise, shops specialising in small ticket gifting saw a significant increase in sales on the back of increased Mothers’ Day promotions leading to better gifting sales than this week last year. Whilst sales on the high street remained flat, lifestyle retailers were boosted by takings from shops in shopping centre locations.

After a number of weeks in the doldrums, a performance of +0.5% should be viewed as a positive performance for the fashion sector. This time last year, a number of fashion retailers launched their midseason sales, so this week’s sales were from a relatively strong base which makes the positive performance even more notable. Although some retailers have now launched their midseason sales, discounting is not as widespread as it was this time last year. There was no discernible split between budget and designer retailers this week, with those who have started discounting noticing the most improved performance. Retailers which have a particular presence on the high street rather than in shopping centre locations also suffered from declining sales due to decreased footfall.

Homewares stayed in positive territory with like-for-likes improving by +4.8%. Home furnishings stores showed the most improvement, whilst home improvement and DIY stores were the weakest performers.

Non-store like-for-likes improved by +20.8% this week, with lifestyle retailers seeing the best performance; reaping the gains of increased Mothers’ Day gift purchases. Some fashion retailers noted particularly strong like-for-like increases this year after launching online sales.

Online clothing sales increased 4% year-on-year compared to a much healthier 20% in February 2014, however, other sectors performed more positively.
