Lifestyle saw its strongest performance for six weeks this week (+4.4%) with retailers in this category being the only ones seeing any gains as shoppers stocked up on holiday goods ahead of the “big getaway” this weekend. We noted an increase in sales of outdoor-related goods (particularly stores which cater for camping supplies) but stores selling more sports-related goods still have get to recover from weeks of negative like-for-likes. Electrical goods also had a strong week this week.

Fashion had a disappointing week this week, with like-for-likes falling by -4.0% against an already weak base. Many retailers reported being hit badly by the lower levels of footfall this week, and 59% of fashion retailers reported negative like-for-likes this week – the highest percentage for six weeks. Designer retailers generally enjoyed a better week this week and footwear outperformed the rest of the sector, declining by -0.56%. Many fashion retailers report being at the end of discounting periods and sales being slower as a result this week.

Homewares enjoyed a good week this week, with like-for-likes rising by +6.07%. Soft furnishings performed well, whilst DIY-related stores had a worse week.

Even non-store sales could not provide a boost to slumping bricks and mortar sales this week, with like for likes only rising by +10.70% – the worst weekly performance for four months. Over a quarter of retailers reported like-for-likes declining by more than 20%, with designer clothing retailers seeing the most notable slide in non-store sales this week. Homeware retailers, including some that are online only, had a surprisingly strong week of non-store sales this week with an adjusted average sales increase of 56%.
