Sales of lifestyle goods this week saw a marginal slide in like-for-likes (-0.1%) although this represents a fairly good performance given the exceptional performance within this category last year. The sector was once again dragged down by relatively poor sales once again of outdoor goods, although this time last year the Commonwealth Games were in full swing so would have provided these types of store with a boost. Department store sales of lifestyle related goods also performed particularly well, with some reporting strong sales in London-based stores due to increased expenditure by tourists.

Fashion was the worst performing sector this week, with like-for-likes plummeting by -4.5%. The only consolation is that last year retailers reported an exceptionally buoyant week almost universally on the back of higher than normal levels of discounting. Less widespread discounting this year coupled with favourable weather generally meant shoppers delayed making fashion-related sales this week. Indeed, those retailers which launched heavy discounting last year saw the worst like-for-likes this year.

Homewares was the only sector which saw an uplift in bricks and mortar sales this week, with like for likes rising by +0.6%. Retail parks saw a rise in footfall of +3.5% this week, and this was reflected in strong sales by homeware retailers with a strong presence in these areas.

Non-store like-for-likes were +13.5% this week – a better performance than recorded last week, but still low for a channel which continues to enjoy strong growth. Within the fashion sector, those retailers which launched new lines this week noted particularly strong sales this week, particularly if these were promoted with targeted email campaigns. Late season discounting also provided a boost to other retailers’ non-store sales. Small ticket gifting and soft furnishings retailers also enjoyed a good week through non-store sales.
