Waitrose have reported a 4.3% increase in sales (including petrol) for the week to 24 October 2015.

Although lifestyle like-for-likes ended up for the week (+0.7%), the performance was slightly underwhelming given many retailers reported negative like-for-likes in 2014. However, this year we noted a significant uplift in sales of stationery and lifestyle goods from department stores, with the performance being brought down by negative like-for-likes by small ticket gifting retailers.

Fashion sales were a particular disappointment this week, with like-for-likes down by -1.6% off an already poor performance in 2014. Designer retailers and specialist retailers suffered the most this week, whilst some mainstream retailers noted a slight uplift in revenues. Some retailers noted an uplift from discounting, although this caused a level of unwelcome margin attrition.

Another poor week for homewares, with like-for-likes ending the week down by -4.8%. Unlike the other sectors however, the results for homewares were off a strong base in 2014 where retailers noted a particular uplift in sales of big ticket furniture and soft furnishings. Interestingly, it was these sale groups of retailers which saw the strongest like-for-likes this year as well.

Non-store sales were unremarkable this week (+17.9%), although this week last year was a particularly strong week for remote transactions. Unlike bricks and mortar sales, it was designer fashion retailers who performed best away from the tills this week. Similarly, remote sales of small ticket gifting items were strong this week – the opposite to what was noted for in store sales.
