Latest figures from the IMRG have revealed that parcel volume growth for the online retail sector increased by 40% in November 2015, the highest month-on-month growth recorded since 2011. This figure clearly reflects the huge demand over the Black Friday period which was extended over a longer timeframe by many retailers this year, and was already building on record October-high year-on-year growth of +15.5%. The year-on-year growth for November 2015 was almost double that of November 2014 (+29.6%). In 2014 the unprecedented scale of Black Friday led to significant problems for the online retail supply chain, as record volumes were concentrated into a very tight window and some retailer and carrier operations were overwhelmed. So far in 2015, ‘on-time / first-time’ delivery performance has been very strong, running at above 92% over the past 12 months and in November, above 93%.

The latest figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index have revealed that online retail sales grew by 40% month-on-month in November 2015, the highest ever month-on-month growth since 2000. During the Black Friday period, shoppers compensated for withheld spending in October 2015, when the index recorded its lowest ever annual growth. The record-breaking increase in online sales was driven by the growth of m-retail with purchases made via a smartphone accounting for 32% of all mobile commerce sales, a record high for these devices. Sales made on a smartphone device grew by 97% year-on-year while purchases made on a tablet reached a record low of just 12% year-on-year, demonstrating a notable shift in mobile spending habits. Electricals and gifts registered impressive month-on-month growth rates of 83% and 134% respectively, however 39% of electrical sales and 40% of gift sales fell in the week of Black Friday. Electricals registered just 5% year-on-year growth in November 2015, continuing what has been a disappointing year for growth in the sector.
