  • AO World have reported a 35.0% increase in revenue for the three months to December 2015. UK revenue increased by 24.0% for the same period.

  • Tesco have reported a 0.4% increase in group like-for-like sales (excluding VAT & fuel) for the 19 weeks to 09 January 2016. UK like-for-like sales decreased by 0.5% for the same period.
  • Waitrose also reported a 3.3% increase in sales (including petrol) for the week to 09 January 2016.

The discounters are continuing to establish themselves in the minds of British consumers with almost one in eight doing their single biggest December shopping trip to Aldi or Lidl, on top of the 15.6 million households who visited at some point in the 12 weeks. That is an increase of nearly one million shoppers on 2014 and their combined share is up from 8.3% in 2014 to 9.7% in 2015. The structural upheaval caused by discounters Aldi and Lidl continued into the Christmas period. Lidl was the fastest growing retailer overall, with sales up by 18.5%.

The latest figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index has revealed that online retail sales recorded a strong 11% year-on-year increase in 2015, equating to approximately £114bn spent online. For 2016, the index has predicted a further 11% growth, with total e-retail sales estimated to be worth £126bn by the end of 2016. The Christmas shopping period as a whole, defined as the eight weeks between 01 November 2015 and 26 December 2015, saw £24.4bn spent online; a 12% annual increase. The figures showed that the greatest concentration of sales during the Christmas period (17%) took place during the week of Black Friday, commencing 22 November 2015. During Black Friday week, what has become the biggest event in the retail calendar, online sales increased 62% on the previous week, with shoppers splashing out an estimated £4.3bn on discounted goods. This represents a significant increase on the 44% growth recorded during the same period in 2014, and 20% in 2013, before Black Friday existed in the UK.

Mobile-retail in 2015 reported a 42% growth on 2014, with 45% of all online sales made via a mobile device during Q3 (August to October). Such is the ballooning influence of mobile technology, for the second year in succession; all growth in the index has been driven by sales made on a mobile.
