Company Results

  • Greggs have reported a 5.2% increase in sales to £835.7m for the 52 weeks to 02 January 2016. Own shop like-for-like sales increased by 4.7% while pre-tax profit excluding exceptional items was reported at £73.0m for the same period.
  • John Lewis have reported a 3.8% increase in sales for the week to 27 February 2016. Fashion, Home and Electricals & Home Technology sales increased by 0.9%, 4.8% and 6.3%, respectively.
  • Scotch whisky sales in the UK returned to growth in volume terms last year but remained far below historical highs.

  • McColl’s Retail Group have reported a 3.1% increase in total sales to £932.2m for the 52 weeks to 29 November 2015. Like-for-like sales decreased by 1.9% while profit before tax was reported at £21.1m for the same period.
  • Travis Perkins have reported a 6.5% increase in revenue to £5.9bn for the year to 31 December 2015. Like-for-like revenue increased by 3.8% while adjusted profit before tax increased by 5.5% to £382m for the same period. The sales for the consumer division stood at £1.4bn.
  • Waitrose have reported a 3.4% increase in sales (excluding petrol) for the week to 27 February 2016.

As per the IRI Retail Advantage figures, there has been a sharp rise in the purchase of avocados, spinach and soft fruits as more shoppers look to follow healthy eating regimes. Sales of avocados rose by 31% in 52 weeks to 02 January 2016 while demand for spinach rose by 21% and greens by 12% for the same period. The figures also suggested that more people are purchasing blenders and juicers from their supermarket, with sales up 49% in the 52 weeks to 02 January 2016 as compared to the previous year. As the craze for blending and juicing continues to grip the country, soft fruit sales also increased by 12%, topping £1bn in sales for the 52 weeks to 02 January 2016 and adding an extra £115m to the economy compared to the previous year. Other categories such as fizzy drinks, fruit juices and dilute-to-taste products were found to be losing ground. In contrast, value sales of bottled waters increased, with the category seeing nearly a 10% rise in 2015 to reach £670m.
