Company Results

  • Asda have reported a 3.8% decrease in net sales for the three months to 30 September 2016. Like-for-like sales decreased by 5.8% for the same period. (Source: Retail Week)
  • B&M have reported an 18.9% increase in group sales to £1.1bn for the 26 weeks to 24 September 2016. UK like-for-like sales increased by 0.2% while profit before tax increased by 17.2% to £77.9m for the same period.
  • Booths have reported a 0.7% decrease in sales to £276.6m for the year to 31 March 2016. (Source: Verdict)
  • Card Factory have reported a 4.4% increase in total sales for the nine months to 31 October 2016.
  • Majestic Wines have reported a 13.2% increase in total sales to £205.6m for the six months to 26 September 2016. Loss before tax stood at £4.4m for the same period.
  • Matchesfashion.com have reported a 27.4% increase in sales to £126.9m for the year to 31 January 2016. (Source: Verdict)

  • Ted Baker have announced a 14.8% increase in group revenue for the 13 weeks to 12 November 2016. Retail sales increased by 15.4% and e-commerce sales increased by 30.3% for the same period.

Lifestyle LFLs suffered a significant decline of -2.03% this week off of an already weak base of -4.5% last year. Stationers, retailers of electrical goods and health and well-being products suffered significant declines this week, with only some gift, outdoor goods and department stores seeing growth.

Fashion recorded its best weekly result since week 2 in January, up by +5.78%. However the result comes off of a very poor week last year when LFL sales growth fell to -7.1%. 60% of respondents reported positive LFL growth this week, as compared to just 23% for the same week last year. The strongest growth was seen amongst the specialty and designer fashion retailers as was the case for the same week last year.

Homeware LFL sales were up by an impressive +14.48% this week off of an already positive base of +5.3% for the same week last year. Shoppers exhibited little determination to wait for Black Friday bargains as increased footfall at retail parks boosted sales for furniture and home furnishing retailers, while department stores also reported strong homeware sales growth.

Non-store LFL sales were up by +18.26%, shy of the 20% threshold off of a base of +13.8% last year. Better growth levels online than in-store saw 79% of fashion retailers report positive non-store growth, compared to 60% of homeware retailers and 75% of lifestyle retailers.

Clothing, Footwear & Accessories

  • River Island are teaming up with MeeBox the UK’s favourite subscription box dedicated to nail products for an exclusive preview of their new collection at their River Island Style Studio on Oxford Street.

  • H&M have announced plans to open five stores at Westfield Stratford City, East London. A flagship store at the shopping centre will be their largest in the country. Four shops will feature the Swedish retailer’s other brands which include COS, Cheap Monday and Monki (Source: Verdict)
  • New Look have announced the launch of augmented reality photobooths to a selection of their flagship stores to drive the brand’s appeal to millennial shoppers.(Source: Retail Week)

Electrical & Entertainment

    • Amazon has launched ‘Amazon Music Unlimited’, a voice-controlled music streaming service in the UK. The service includes 40 million songs and thousands of playlists that can be requested via Amazon’s Echo smart home device. (Source: Telegraph)
    • Amazon have also launched their Black Friday event with plans to run discounts over 12 day period starting 14 November 2016. (Source: Telegraph)
    • Argos have announced a 13 day Black Friday sale starting 18 November 2016, with deals including discount laptops and TVs. (Source: Company Press Release)
    • Lego have opened a 5,420 sq. ft. store in Leicester Square, London on 17th November 2016. (Source: Retail Week)
  • Staples, the US based stationery specialist have announced the sale of their UK retail business to restructuring firm Hilco. (Source: Telegraph)

The IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index has revealed online sales growth of 18.9% y-o-y in October 2016, which was the highest growth since November 2014. The index also recorded its lowest conversion rate of 4.1%, the percentage of website visits that result in sales. This has been due to increasing number of people visiting company websites and building wish lists.

Home goods performed particularly well with a 23.9% y-o-y increase in October 2016. This is expected to have been attributable to sterling weakening , with more people focused on home improvements rather than foreign holidays. Other sectors that showed growth include accessories that increased by 37.7% y-o-y and gifts that increased 29.1% y-o-y in October 2016. However, in contrast, sales in health and beauty decreased by 12.2% y-o-y, while beauty sales decreased by 1.9% y-o-y in October 2016.

Food & Drink

  • Morrisons have launched the ‘Morrisons at Amazon‘ service that will allow Amazon Prime customers in selected areas to order a full Morrisons shop online via the Prime Now app.(Source: Telegraph)
  • Tesco have announced their biggest ever Black Friday event with 11 days of deal starting 21 November 2016 and more than 700 stores offering Black Friday deals. (Source: Company Press Release)
  • Sainsbury’s have launched their new Christmas advert, an animated campaign that is designed to emphasise sharing the gift of time. (Source: Company Press Release)
